My classmates and I met at Green/Spaces Thursday to see Cindy Li and begin an awesome day of learning. In a day called: “Design Your Future” we got to listen to a very intelligent woman who got us thinking about networking and our futures.

The morning session at Green/Spaces was “Networking without the Ick.” It really got us thinking:

Do you know what your privacy settings on Facebook are?
-I’m going through my friend’s list and privacy settings on Facebook.
-I don’t post pictures I wouldn’t mind someone I don’t know seeing or one of my friends taking and posting elsewhere.
-I delete comments and tags I don’t want in relation to me.
-My address and phone number are not on Facebook and never will be. I don’t post that information on anyone’s wall. I also don’t post images of the place I live.

What are you saying on Twitter?
- I never post anything I wouldn’t mind my teacher seeing, or strangers.
- I try to never complain about anything serious on Twitter. In 140 characters how can I explain my complaint in real context? Maybe you won’t agree with me. Maybe I’m only mad at the moment. Maybe I don’t have all the information.

Cindy also made a good point about avatars: put your face! The tweets from my friends are more engaging because they have posted their picture. I think having the picture there makes the tweet more real and as if they are saying it to me and I’m not reading it on the computer. I think it keeps us connected.

Do you honor your social contracts?
- Are you tweeting something someone said that might anger them? Are you betraying their trust?
- Are you posting images of someone’s children?
- Are you posting images of a friend or yourself that might compromise  them/you later?

Have you Googled yourself?

I’ve been going through and tagging my photos on Flickr and adding tags to my blog posts.

Who are you letting into your private world?

After the presentation Cindy was nice enough to come back to campus and speak with us. She gave us a few insider tips.

The best lunch I ever had followed. Medium (formerly Coptix) treated us to Easy Bistro. The people at Easy Bistro are very nice and we felt very welcomed there. The food was amazing and I can’t wait to go back. The conversation was awesome because we’re all a little goofy.

I had an English class just after that and a presentation. Then a few hours in the art building with cool people and…

We met at CreateHere at 6:00 pm for more awesomeness with Cindy Li about Creating Opportunity. Again, we were introduce to thoughts that were beginning to form in our minds but we weren’t there just yet.

What do you want? Money? Friends/Network? To travel? Fame?

Are you respecting people? Graphic Design is a community. There’s give and take. You need to be respectful and nice to everyone (this is something we need to do with everyone and not just those we work with).

Everything you do can be an opportunity.

We’re greeks.

Maybe you had to be there to know how exciting it was, but it was.

Thank you CreateHere,  Green/Spaces, Medium (formerly Coptix), Cindy Li, Easy Bistro, and Leslie!
